The West Virginia State University Extension Services SCRATCH program is a hands-on learning community where youth and their families are invited to take part in agriculture based economic model. The SCRATCH program in Huntington, WV is one of the first of its kind. Program participants (K-12 youth) learn to grow, produce, and process food for consumption. Through use of the Junior Master Gardener curriculum, farming practices, and business practices, participants make an end-use product to sale. SCRATCH is first and foremost, a local food initiative. Secondary to this, it is a local micro-economy initiative.
